October 3 Special Legislative Session on Redistricting

Gov. Gary Herbert announced Wednesday that he's calling lawmakers into 
special session on Oct. 3 to approve new boundaries for the state's legislative, 
congressional and school board districts.

The special session is expected to last more than one day.

8 Candidates have filed for Orem City Council

September 13, Primary Election  7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Voters can vote for up to 3 candidates.

There are 3 Council members up for re-election in 2011.
Incumbents Margaret Black and Mark Seastrand are running again.
Incumbent council members Dean Dickerson  and Shiree Thurston are also
running.  They both lost their 2009 re-election bids to Orem City Council, so
they are not currently city council members.
Hans V. Andersen,  Jr. William K. Bill Stewart, Anietie Wilson Umoren, and
John D. VanCott are the remaining candidates on the ballot.

Utah GOP 2012 Caucus March 15 Democrats March 13

The State Central Committee (100 in attendance) voted Saturday
August 27, 2011 to hold the Utah GOP Caucus/mass meeting on a
different night than the Democratic Caucus.  They didn't take a count
consequently no one has been able to tell me how many of the 100
SCC members voted for the different night from the Democrats.

Factoring in the decision is the

Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act (MOVE Act)

The Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act is a federal law that is designed to improve the delivery of absentee ballots to members of the armed forces and Americans temporarily living overseas.

This Act passed congress in 2009 and gives the military men more time

Utah Legislature votes on SB 162 to comply with MOVE ACT

Note the times that SB 162 was voted on, March 4 House, 

and March 9 in Senate.  There was such a huge uproar by that 

time on HB 477  I guess no one noticed the impact of this bill on Utah.

In order for Utah to comply with this act they needed to move the date of the
June Primary later or move the caucus date up because the state convention
is now in April, slightly over 4 weeks after the caucus.  Some county conventions
are only days AFTER the caucus, raising the question of how candidates
will get the delegate names prior to the conventions.

Another issue on the caucus is the candidate filing date.  The candidate filing
date ends March 15, the date of the GOP caucus, however the Utah Democratic
caucus is 2 days BEFORE the candidate filing deadline in Utah.

Orem City Early Voting Starts Tuesday August 30

Early Voting for the Sept. 13 Primary election starts
Tuesday August 30 and ends Friday September 9.

You can vote ONLY at the Orem City Center, 56 North State
Street in the Recorder's Office from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Monday through Thursday and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Recorder's Office will be closed on Labor Day Monday
September 5.

Orem's Midtown Village to be Auctioned

Donald W. Meyers | The Salt Lake Tribune) Orem officials are again preparing to auction off Midtown Village after the property's owners failed to make the annual loan payment to the city. The city also had debris cleaned on the State Street property.

"The project stands uncompleted. The south building is finished, with some of the condos occupied and a pizzeria and an IT company among the commercial tenants.

The north building is half-finished, surrounded by chain-link fencing and dried grass, with gaping holes where windows should be.

Larry Myler, the original developer, said earlier he is no longer connected with the project."

September 24 Central Committee Meeting at Mountain View High

The next Utah County Central Committee Meeting is Saturday
September 24, 2011 from 9 a.m. to Noon at Mountain View High School

665 W Center St, Orem

The last Central Committee meeting in 2011 is scheduled for Thursday November 17.

The precinct chairs and precinct vice chairs make up the central committee and
should try to attend these meetings.

Governor Herbert has a new Blog

The governor's office announced on Thursday the creation of a new blog to be featured on his website. The announcement was made in a statement saying that the blog will serve as an avenue for Utah citizens to gain insight into the governor's priorities.

Utah County Fair August 17-20

The Utah County Fair is back in Spanish Fork on the Spanish Fork
Fairgrounds.  It opens Wednesday August 17 at 4:00 p.m.  The Utah County

Bill to stop Utah State Income tax donations to political parties

Rep. John Dougall, R-Highland is sponsoring a bill to present in the 2012 Legislative
Session to stop the option for a person to donate to a political party through the state
income tax form.

"In 2010 taxpayers chose to send $127,950 to political parties in the state. Utah County

parties received about $8,200 of that money. The Utah County Democratic party

received $1,388, and $6,138 was distributed to the county Republican party.

The remaining money was distributed to the smaller parties in the county."   Billy
