The U.S. Department of Homeland Security audit of Salt Lake City's Grand America
Hotel that began October 2010 found undocumented workers.
During this audit process, Department of Homeland Security determined that
some hotel employees did
not have valid documentation to work in the
United States even though
they had presented facially valid documents
when they were hired.
Homeland Security notified the hotel that those who had not been able to
document
their right to work in the United States during the audit
could no longer be employed
after August 31, 2011. In order to comply
with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security audit,
the Grand America Hotel laid off all workers who couldn’t provide
legal documentation to work in the United States to the
U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
In 2006, the Grand America hotel began verifying all applicant Social Security
numbers with the Social Security Administration.
State Workforce Service records indicate the Grand America hotel has a workforce
of between 599 and 1,000 people, however hotel officials did not verify
either the number of hotel employees or the number of people who were unable
to provide legal documentation to the audit, and consequently were laid off
yesterday.
