Utah Cancer Docs: Use of small Practice Pharmacy in Question
"Patients at Utah Cancer Specialists, which runs 11 cancer treatment centers around the state, can get drugs from their oncologists after intravenous chemotherapy, saving them a stop at a retail drug store.
The group was licensed six years ago to run a Class B pharmacy, also known as a practice pharmacy, to provide that convenience.
But the centers say the state Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing is now investigating them, after a pharmacist filed a complaint alleging illegal physician dispensing." Patty Henetz Salt Lake Tribune
Lawmakers Advance bill allowing Utah doctors to dispense drugs
"ing oncologists to dispense cancer-treatment drugs could endanger patients’ lives, a Utah pharmacist warned lawmakers considering a change to state law.
Pharmacist Terry Bullard said that 25 percent of the chemotherapy orders she receives at the Intermountain Medical Center pharmacy in Murray are wrong.
"Every oncologist in Utah makes mistakes. Pharmacists are there to make a second look," she said. "It only takes one little tiny mistake for these patients to die suddenly."
Bullard spoke against SB161 Tuesday before the Senate Business and Labor Committee. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo, seeks to change state law that says physicians may administer medications, but only pharmacists may dispense them." Patty Henetz. Salt Lake Tribune
