SB39 Sex education bill to be reviewed in legislative session

                                                       Senator Stuart Reid, R-Ogden

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Parents may not always know how to explain the “birds and the bees” to their children, but lawmakers could soon change that.

Senate Bill 39 would require the Utah State Board of Education to offer training to parents regarding health education, including human sexuality, for their children.

It bill was approved for filing by the Legislative General Counsel.

Some parents believe the proposal is a good idea, since they aren’t sure how to approach the sex talk.

“A lot of parents don’t know how to go about teaching their children,” Cindy Croonenborgh said.

Stuart Reid, the chief sponsor of the bill, created the proposal to help parents teach sex education in the privacy of their home. Some parents have opted out of their children being taught at school.

Reid said the bill would give parents the tools they need. The bill comes after a heated debate and veto of House Bill 363 which would have scaled back sex education in the classroom.

Other parents believe sex education should be taught in both the school and at home.

The 2013 general session begins January 28th.
