Brent Sumner and Mary Street still support UTOPIA after Legislative Audit shows mis-management and waste of tax dollars!

"We all know it's had a bumpy road at the beginning," Councilman Brent Sumner said. "I've been skeptical of signing up for it from the beginning but I think they are on the right path to correct it."
He added that UTOPIA must step up its sales efforts in Orem. "We need to show people the value of this thing," Sumner said. Sumner noted that he signed up for UTOPIA last week.
Councilwoman Mary Street, who represents Orem on the UTOPIA board, took a slightly rosier view of the present, if not the history of UTOPIA.
"If you take a historical view there is no question there were missteps in the beginning," Street said. "The audit is accurate, but I didn't think there was anything harmful to UTOPIA in it."
Street says she is committed to getting fiber to homes and businesses. "There's no secret that doing an enterprise like this is expensive up front, that's why the private sector hasn't done a UTOPIA. We're doing it the Utah way. We're knocking door to door and doing it on a shoestring."
As a board member, Street said if she had her way they would create special improvement districts and pay as you go with fees being put on utility bills. "It's not too late to do this. The biggest problem I have is helping the number of people who want it and don't have it." Herald Extra.com
