Orem considers Sunday beer sales
OREM -- The Orem City Council will consider a number of requests Tuesday from local merchants and tavern owners that the city allow Sunday beer sales. Orem is one of the few cities remaining in the county that doesn't allow Sunday sales.
"We're going through the entire alcohol ordinance and updating it," Public Safety Chief Mike Larsen said. "We are cleaning up the entire ordinance."
Larsen and assistant city attorney Steve Earl will make the presentation during the 6 p.m. council meeting.
Cities have jurisdiction over Sunday beer sales at retailers within their borders, but not over state liquor stores.
"We are an island," Larsen said. Every city surrounding Orem allows Sunday beer sales.
"From a public safety point of view, I don't anticipate any change in Sunday activities," he said. Larsen noted that residents already travel through the city to get beer from neighboring towns and the notion that there will be an uptick in DUIs and other issues is not a concern.
The agenda item is not scheduled as a public hearing, and the council could elect to not hear public comment on the issue. Larsen did say they are tackling just the beer issue at this Tuesday's meeting.
